Amazon has begun operating a quick commerce service in India, offering grocery and essential delivery within 15 minutes. The move pits the US software giant against competitors such as Zepto, Instamart, and Blinkit in the country's rapidly rising quick commerce market.
Samir Kumar, Amazon's new national manager, said this during a media briefing at the company's Smbhav summit.
Amazon has stated that it will begin the trial phase in Bengaluru. This is Kumar's first major initiative since taking over from former CEO Manish Tiwary two months ago.
Although the name of the new service has yet to be formally revealed, signs from the briefing suggest it will be called Amazon Tez. The pilot is planned to launch later this month, with its debut before the end of 2024.
"Our strategy has always focused on 'Selection, Value, and Convenience', and our vision is to build a large profitable business in India," said Samir Kumar, Amazon India's new country manager, in a statement.
Kumar continued "So, while we focus on implementing our strategy to offer the largest selection at fastest speeds and greatest value to customers in every single pin-code across the country, we are excited to start a pilot to give our customers a choice to get their everyday essentials in 15 min or less."
