Apple workforce in India might reach 600,000 by the end of the fiscal year

By Consultants Review Team Saturday, 31 August 2024

According to a recent report, Apple, the IT giant, is anticipated to dramatically increase its workforce in the Indian market, perhaps adding approximately 600,000 jobs by the end of the fiscal year. This calculated action seems to be a component of Apple's endeavors to lessen its reliance on Chinese manufacturers. It is expected that Apple will employ over 200,000 people in India by the end of March of next year, with women accounting for roughly 70% of this workforce.

According to the research, Foxconn, Wistron, and Pegatron, Apple's three primary iPhone makers in India, have so far generated 80,872 direct employment. An additional 84,000 jobs have been created by suppliers.

The research goes on to say that Apple has become the largest employer of blue-collar workers in India in recent years, and that a large percentage of these jobs are held by women and those who are just starting out in the workforce.

Using the same sources, the study claims that "since the introduction of the smartphone Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme in 2020, Apple's vendors and suppliers have established roughly 165,000 direct jobs."

Apple started producing iPhones in India in 2021, and ever since then, the corporation has gradually increased the size of its manufacturing presence in the nation. Remarkably, common iPhone models made in India, such the 14 and 15, are already being shipped to other countries.

With the release of the iPhone 16 Pro, Apple's production strategy in India may undergo a significant change. Thus yet, only the ordinary iPhone models have been made in the country; the 'Pro' variants are only made in China. It is a noteworthy milestone since they would be the first 'Pro' models to be both built in India and designed for the Indian market. Nevertheless, a number of sources suggest that Apple intends to make the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max in India for the first time.
