Completely Prepared, Needing Govt Approval: Sunil Mittal on OneWeb Satellite Services Launch

By Consultants Review Team Tuesday, 13 August 2024

Sunil Mittal, Chairman of Bharti, stated that OneWeb is completely set to begin its satellite services and is awaiting final permission from the Indian government.

Mittal stated that OneWeb's two satellite network gateways, one in the south and one in the north, are ready for use. The business has tested the system in a variety of tough environments, including the Himalayas and deserts, to demonstrate its capabilities to the army, navy, and other government departments.

"We are ready for launch," Mittal remarked. "The satellites are constantly orbiting India, and we are now just waiting for the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to activate these network portals for commercial use." We hope for a quick clearance because these services are desperately needed, particularly in rural and challenging places."

He stated that the terminals are currently in place in India, but commercial operations cannot begin until all relevant clearances are obtained. "We have completed all test cases, which have been approved, but cannot proceed to commercial service without formal authorization," said Mittal.

Mittal stated that the telecom department had sent the case to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) for consultation. "We expect clearance as soon as Trai has completed its examination. We have also assured the DoT that we are ready to comply with any interim permissions granted while we await the final decision," Mittal stated.

The next stage is now up to the DoT, with Mittal underlining that OneWeb is completely prepared and merely waiting for approval.
