DeepSeek AI Model is Intriguing, but OpenAI's Sam Altman Assures Better

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has weighed in on the growing buzz surrounding Chinese AI startup DeepSeek, which caused a stir in Silicon Valley last week with the release of DeepSeek R1, an open-source AI model. Altman, best known for kicking off the AI revolution with ChatGPT in November 2022, praised DeepSeek's new offering, calling R1 a "impressive model".

"DeepSeek's R1 is an impressive model, especially for what they can deliver for the price," Altman wrote in a post on X this morning. He went on to express his excitement at the emergence of new competition in the AI space.

"It's invigorating to have a new competitor!" Altman said. While acknowledging DeepSeek's achievement, he assured the AI community that OpenAI is still confident in its ability to deliver even better models.

"We will obviously deliver much better models, and it's legit invigorating to have a new competitor!" he added, implying that OpenAI intends to accelerate its releases in response to market competition while remaining focused on its long-term goal: Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

Altman added that, while OpenAI may change its release schedule, the company's focus will remain on its research roadmap. "We'll pull up some releases. But, most importantly, we are excited to continue executing on our research roadmap, and we believe that more compute is more important than ever in order to achieve our mission," he stated. He also suggested that investing in more computing power would be critical for OpenAI to maintain its lead in the AI race.

In closing, Altman expressed his enthusiasm for the future of artificial intelligence. "The world will need a lot of AI, and people are going to be amazed by the next generation of AI models," he wrote, reaffirming OpenAI's commitment to developing AGI, a type of artificial intelligence that has the potential to surpass human cognitive abilities.

Altman's comments come just days after he clarified that OpenAI had not yet developed AGI, a concept that is still theoretical. However, in a blog post published on January 6, Altman expressed OpenAI's confidence that they know how to build AGI and intend to deploy it by 2025.
