Google Maps Introduces Offline Mode for WearOS Smartwatches in Public Beta

By Consultants Review Team Monday, 19 August 2024

Google Maps now offers offline mode on select Wear OS-powered smartwatches, enabling users to store map data on the device for navigation without an internet connection. According to 9to5Google, this offline support is being rolled out in the public beta version.

After updating the Google Maps app, users will see a banner indicating that “Offline maps on the phone are auto-downloaded to the watch.” In the latest public beta, a new “Offline maps” page has been added above the “Settings” near the bottom of the main menu.

The watch app automatically downloads maps for the user's local area and syncs offline areas saved on the phone. It also displays the amount of space used by the maps and allows users to delete them with a tap, similar to the Android experience. Google notes that the watch syncs automatically when connected to Wi-Fi and charging. In offline mode, a slashed cloud icon appears next to the time on the map view.

This feature is accompanied by a new “Search & go” tile on Home and Work shortcuts and a microphone for voice input. Users can also access the map view directly with a single tap, bypassing the main feed. Additionally, managing downloaded maps on the smartwatch is possible through the new “Offline maps” button, which includes an option to “Manage on Phone.”

According to 9to5Google, this update is available in version 11.140.0701.W of Google Maps for Wear OS on the Pixel Watch 2, which is also part of the public Google Maps beta.
