The Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) recently hosted its 13th Green Energy Summit, focusing on the theme “Green Energy Transition: India’s Moment of Opportunity.” The summit spotlighted critical areas such as nuclear energy, solar equipment manufacturing, battery storage solutions, and coal gasification. A key moment of the event was the launch of a Knowledge Paper titled “Advancing Sustainable Energy Transition – Pathway for Net-Zero Future in India”. This document outlined strategies to accelerate India’s transition to greener energy solutions.

The Knowledge Paper provided several recommendations to fast-track India’s green energy progress. These included adding 40-50 GW of renewable energy capacity annually, strengthening local manufacturing capabilities, temporarily relaxing trade barriers on imported solar cells and modules, and expanding hydro and nuclear projects. Additionally, it emphasized the need for streamlined land acquisition processes to facilitate smoother project development. The summit gathered industry leaders, policymakers, and experts to discuss India’s roadmap to a sustainable energy future.

A central focus of the Knowledge Paper was India’s journey to a net-zero economy by 2070. It underscored the importance of technology, policy innovation, and financing models to drive this transition. Key areas explored included clean energy solutions for decarbonizing the power grid, the role of Green Hydrogen , and the necessity of strategic funding, clear policies, and the adoption of technologies such as Carbon Capture Utilization and Storage (CCUS) and long-duration energy storage.

Anil Razdan, Chair of the ICC National Expert Committee on Energy and former Secretary of Power, Government of India, emphasized the growing demand for electricity in daily life, stating, “If there are 12 people sitting or standing in a public space, 10 of them are on their mobiles or some electronic device and each one of them needs electricity. So electricity has become really a part of our lives. It has to be friendly to the consumer. It has to be accessible, it has to be available in much larger quantities than we have ever experienced because mostly it was in static locations. Today, we want it more actual. When we talk of green energy, we need to talk of all three topics that we discussed today, i.e., solar, wind, nuclear as well as gasification.”

The summit culminated with the 5th Green Urja and Energy Efficiency Awards, which celebrated excellence in renewable energy. Notable winners included Tata Capital Ltd, Berger Paints India, and Adani Green Energy Limited. The awards were presented by Dr Anil Kumar Jain, Chairperson of the PNGRB, Neerja Mathur, former Chairperson of the CEA, and Dr Ashvini Kumar, former Managing Director of SECI.

In his closing remarks, Kush Singh, Co-Chair of the ICC National Expert Committee on Energy and Head-Power at RPSG Group, highlighted the government's commitment to energy self-sufficiency, stating, “The Government today is focused on not only just vanilla green to green transition. They are focused on becoming self-sufficient. They are focused towards maximizing the utilization of internal resources and synchronizing everybody together towards this mission”.

The event reinforced India’s determination to embrace sustainable energy solutions and set the foundation for actionable steps toward a greener, more energy-efficient future.
