India Seeks to Host the Third Edition of Global South Summit on August 17

By Consultants Review Team Saturday, 03 August 2024

India is slated to hold the third edition of the Voice of the Global South Summit on August 17, with an emphasis on tackling important concerns such as the effect of conflicts and development-related issues, in addition to climate change.

The summit, which will take place virtually, would be led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with the ministerial sessions, ET has learned.

By hosting this summit, India hopes to create a forum for nations in the Global South to exchange their perspectives, concerns, and objectives on a shared platform.

The summit's first edition took place in January 2023, while the second was held in November 2023, two months after India hosted the G20 summit.

"Together, for Everyone's Growth, with Everyone's Trust" was the topic of the second summit, whereas "Unity of Voice, Unity of Purpose" was the theme of the first. More than 120 nations have attended the summits, which have as their main topics global governance, international cooperation, sustainable development, and climate change.

Foreign ministers, education ministers, finance ministers, environment ministers, energy ministers, health ministers, and trade ministers all participated in the ministerial sessions.

During the summit last year, Modi opened the Global South Centre of Excellence, also referred to as "Dakshin," which would serve as a hub for fostering closer cooperation amongst the Global South's member nations.

The announcements cover the Global South Young Diplomats Forum, the Global South Science and Technology Initiative platform, the Global South Scholarship Program, and collaboration in the health sector. The implications of the situation in West Asia and the Russia-Ukraine conflict were also discussed during the summit last year
