Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal has disclosed the significant influence of the hugely ambitious 'Make in India' project on the country's manufacturing and economic environment as the country marks ten years of its launch. During his speech on Wednesday, Goyal discussed the major accomplishments made since the initiative's start, including the sharp drop in imports of mobile phones and the rise in domestic production.
Goyal explained how the production of mobile phones has been almost entirely localized. He mentioned that India's imports of mobile phones were a whopping ₹48,609 crore before the introduction of 'Make in India' in 2014. But by 2023–24, that amount had dropped to a mere ₹7,665 crore, a remarkable 85% decrease.
However, the changes are not limited to the mobile sector. Goyal claims that between 2022 and 2024, the number of manufacturing jobs increased by an astounding 200%, supporting livelihoods and growing the industrial workforce. Goyal applauded this development, highlighting how 'Make in India' has grown into a national movement and helped India get closer to its objective of becoming a major player in the world manufacturing market.
The minister took delight in the accomplishments of the initiative in a post shared on X: "Today commemorates #10YearsOfMakeInIndia, a ground-breaking program started by PM @NarendraModiji in 2014 that has transformed India's manufacturing sector and bolstered our country's economic expansion. The emergence of our nation as a Global Manufacturing Hub has been made possible by the national force that has been @MakeInIndia over the past ten years," he added.
The goal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "Make in India" campaign, which was introduced in 2014, was to reduce reliance on imports, generate employment, and establish India as a global manufacturing hub.
