CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced on July 31 that Meta's Threads is on track to reach 200 million monthly active users (MAUs), illustrating the social media platform's explosive growth trajectory as it positions itself to take on Elon Musk's X, formerly known as Twitter.
By doing this, Threads will have twice as many users as it did in October 2023—100 million MAUs. After only roughly a year of release, the app currently boasts over one-third of X's 600 million user base.
"We're moving along steadily with the development of what appears to be yet another significant social app. I'm happy with the direction here and we're seeing deeper engagement," Zuckerberg stated on July 31st, during the company's earnings call.
In less than five days after its July 2023 launch, Instagram, owned by Meta, attracted 100 million sign-ups, making Threads the fastest-growing consumer product globally.
Following its initial boom, the app's usage drastically decreased in the months that followed since it lacked several features that are now standard on social media platforms. This contains support for numerous accounts, a fully complete online application, and keyword search.
But in the months that followed, Meta swiftly added these features—as well as others like trending topics, a chronological feed, and a free edit button for all users—to Threads.
As a result of these modifications, the app's usage and downloads have increased again. Additionally, Meta has been pushing Threads postings on its photo- and video-sharing program Instagram in recent months, which has probably contributed to the surge in Threads usage.
Before the app's one-year anniversary in July, Zuckerberg announced that Threads had more than 175 million MAUs, up from more than 150 million MAUs in April.
In addition to Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, the CEO of Meta anticipates that Threads will become the next social network with one billion users. He does point out that it will take "multiple years" to reach 1 billion people.
