Meta Unveils Llama 3.1, an Open-source AI Model that Claims to Outperform ChatGPT

By Consultants Review Team Wednesday, 24 July 2024

Meta has been talking about releasing a well-constructed open-source AI model, and on July 23, it finally did. Meta Llama 3.1 is the company's first offering for the AI sector. According to the business, this is the largest open-source AI model ever created, and it has already surpassed its top competitors. According to Meta's blog post, the updated model outperforms GPT 4o and Anthropic's Claude 3.5 Sonnet on various benchmarks. Meta is also increasing the reach of its Llama-based AI assistant to more countries and languages, as well as launching a new function that generates images based on a person's distinctive look.

Last year, Llama 2 was only comparable to a previous generation of vehicles behind the Frontier. This year, Llama 3 competes with the most modern models and even leads in several categories.

What is Llama 3.1?

Llama 3.1 is Meta's most complicated AI model thus far. It is worth noting that the most recent Meta AI version is based on Llama 3, and it is rather enjoyable to use. In a blog post, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg stated that, just as Linux surpassed proprietary operating systems, open-source AI models are rapidly advancing and poised to surpass proprietary ones, mirroring Linux's path to becoming the dominant force in powering modern devices and infrastructure.

He compares Meta's commitment in open-source AI to its prior Open Compute Project, which achieved considerable cost reductions through collaborative innovation. He envisions a similar conclusion with AI, in which open-source development will promote breakthroughs and efficiency, comparable to the Open Compute Project's success in data center architecture and operations.

He went on: "I believe the Llama 3.1 release will be an inflection point in the industry where most developers begin to primarily use open source, and I expect that approach to only grow from here."

The models will be offered across all major clouds, including AWS, Azure, Google, Oracle, and others.Companies such as Scale.AI, Dell, Deloitte, and others are ready to assist companies with implementing Llama and training bespoke models using their own data.

It's unsurprising that Meta makes no mention of model training. It has not published the exact source data utilized to train Llama 3.1.

MetaAI is now multilingual

Along with the Llama 3.1, Meta has announced that the MetaAI, the assistant in Meta applications, would now be multilingual.Meta AI is currently accessible in 22 countries, with the newest being Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico, Peru, and Cameroon.

Users may also communicate with Meta AI via WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger, and Facebook in new languages, including French, German, Hindi, Hindi-Romanized Script, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish, with more to come.
