Neville Tata has taken over leadership of Star Bazaar, Trent Ltd's hypermarket business and a significant retail component of the Tata Group.
Trent Ltd has highlighted its hypermarket category as a key development area, led by CEO P Venkatesalu. Trent Hypermarket, a 50:50 joint venture between Tata and British retailer Tesco, runs 66 Star Bazaar outlets in India.
Neville, a 32-year-old Bayes Business School alumni, is the son of Noel Tata, chairman of Trent Ltd, and the half-brother of Ratan Tata, Tata Sons' chairman emeritus. Insiders believe Neville will be closely coached by his father as he steps into this leadership post, with potential future positions as CEO or executive director of the hypermarket business.
Neville joined Trent Ltd in 2016, initially supervising packaged food and drinks before moving on to manage Zudio, one of India's biggest garment businesses. Neville, who previously served as a non-executive director on Trent Hypermarket's board, has now stepped down to take on a more hands-on role.
His sisters, Leah and Maya, are also associated with Tata Group enterprises. Leah, 39, is the Gateway brand manager at Indian Hotels, and Maya, 36, is an analytics and technology specialist at Tata Digital. The three siblings have been appointed trustees for five affiliates of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Sir Ratan Tata Trust. Noel Tata also serves as chairman of Voltas and trustee of Tata Trusts, which has a 66 percent share in Tata Sons.
