Ola Electric is Accused of Data Theft by MapMyIndia: Files a Lawsuit

By Consultants Review Team Tuesday, 30 July 2024

The parent company of MapMyIndia, CE Info Systems, has served Ola Electric with a legal notice for allegedly stealing its data, just as the Bhavish Aggarwal-led startup was launching its own mapping service in India. Ola Electric was accused by MapMyIndia of violating the license agreement in the legal notice.

Ola Electric joined MapMyIndia in 2022 in order to provide navigational services for its S1 Pro electric scooter. MapMyIndia states that Ola was not allowed to combine the licensed product with any other comparable competing product, engage in reverse engineering, or attempt to extract or copy the source code from any software that is connected to or uses an API for the licensed product.

MapMyIndia claims in the notice that Ola Maps cached and saved its data, which is against the terms of the license agreement signed in 2021. The Delhi-based company further stated that it will take Ola Electric to proper legal measures, including civil and criminal prosecution. We want to be clear that these accusations are untrue, vicious, and misleading. Ola Electric is steadfast in its commitment to ethical business conduct. A representative for Ola Electric stated in a statement, "We will appropriately respond to the notice shortly."

The Bengaluru-based company introduced Ola Maps earlier this month as a Google Maps substitute. The company has switched from using Google Maps to its own internal mapping solution. According to Aggarwal, his organization expects this step to save Rs 100 crore annually. Google has reduced the cost of the Google Maps platform for developers in India by as much as 70% in reaction to Ola Maps' free services.

Additionally, the tech behemoth announced that developers collaborating with the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) will receive a 90% discount.

In December 2021, MapMyIndia became public on the stock exchange. With an operating revenue of Rs 106 crore, the company recorded a 35% increase in net profit to Rs 38.2 crore in the final quarter of FY24. On August 2, Ola Electric is scheduled to make its stock market debut.
