Ola CEO Bhavish Aggarwal had an online argument with comedian Kunal Kamra on Sunday. The company's stock dropped 9% on Monday as furious consumers flooded social media. Ola Electric appears to be facing problems that are unlikely to be resolved very soon. The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has issued a show-cause notice to the electric car maker due to inadequate conditions at its service stations around the country.
What the notice against Ola Electric states
According to sources, the CCPA has taken cognisance of hundreds of complaints against Ola Electric, which are increasing by the day. Between September 1, 2023 and August 30, 2024, the National Consumer Helpline, which is overseen by the Department of Consumer Affairs, received 10,644 complaints about Ola e-scooters. These include 3,389 servicing delays, 1,899 delays in the delivery of new cars, and 1,459 unmet promises.
The show-cause letter cites customer concerns including manufacture problems, partial or no reimbursements for booking cancellations, reoccurring faults despite service, overcharging, erroneous invoicing, and a variety of battery and vehicle component difficulties.
The notice requires the Bhavish Aggarwal-run EV firm to react within 15 days of receipt.
Nidhi Khare, Secretary of the Department of Consumer Affairs, confirmed the scope of the complaints against Ola Electric, saying, "The CCPA is investigating a high number of complaints concerning Ola Electric, mostly over service inefficiencies. We hope the corporation responds quickly to these concerns and remedies the difficulties raised by customers."
Bhavish Aggarwal vs Kunal Kamra
In a post on X last week, Kamra expressed concern over the company's electric scooter repair station condition. He posted a photograph of a big number of EV scooters sitting at an Ola repair center and remarked, "Do Indian customers have a voice? Do they deserve it? Daily wage laborers rely heavily on two-wheelers.
CEO Bhavish Aggarwal responded to Kamra's tweet, saying it was a compensated role and that Kamra may 'come and help'.
"Since you care so much, @kunalkamra88, come assist us out! I'll even pay more than you made on this sponsored tweet or from your failing comedy career. Alternatively, sit quietly and let us work on resolving the difficulties for the genuine customers. We are rapidly extending our service network, and backlogs will be resolved soon."
