On Tuesday, Sam Altman, CEO at OpenAI announced that Aleksander Madry, the AI safety leader at the company, is heading a new research project as part of the startup’s reorganizing of its preparedness team.
"Aleksander is working on a new and v(very) important research project," Altman mentioned in a post on X that Joaquin Quinonero Candela and Lilian Weng will temporarily lead the preparedness team at OpenAI.
The preparedness team assists in assessing the artificial general intelligence readiness of the company’s AI models, a spokesperson for OpenAI said in a statement, adding Madry will take on a bigger role within the research organization following the move.
Madry took time to respond to the request's comment.
"Joaquin and Lilian are taking over the preparedness team as part of unifying our safety work", Altman wrote in a social media post.
The Information, which was the first to report Madry’s move, the whole team’s work was managed by researcher Tejal Patwardhan.
The progress comes when OpenAI’s chatbots, which can engage in human conservation and produce videos and images based on the given information, have become increasingly powerful and have safety concerns.
Earlier this year, the Microsoft-supported company formed a Safety and Security Committee led by board members, including Sam Altman, ahead of its improvement for the next artificial intelligence model.
