Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma underlined the revolutionary potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in India at the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit 2023. Sharma emphasized that AI is more than a scientific achievement; it is a necessity for everyday living in India due to a shortage of resources for key services.
Sharma also emphasized on education, claiming that despite having the finest demographics, India confronts enormous issues. Many teachers and students struggle with English since it is not their first language. While the internet and globally accessible films have made content more accessible, the lack of an engaging teacher remains a barrier.
"AI bots, especially local language AI bots built in India, will be a phenomenal leap forward in education," Sharma added. He saw a future in which AI supplemented classroom teaching, allowing students to transcend linguistic obstacles and attain global relevance. This concept extends from early childhood education to post-graduate and doctoral studies.
Sharma also mentioned the potential of AI in healthcare and finance. He further explained the importance of AI solutions adapted to India's particular demands and data, underlining that it is the responsibility of Indian entrepreneurs to build these solutions.
Sharma further stated the importance of India developing its artificial intelligence solutions rather than relying entirely on Western ones. While Western solutions have succeeded for social networks and search engines, he believes that AI services must be adapted to local needs. This is owing to the country's unique statistics and specific needs.
He went on to say, "Whether through an open source large language model or by training a model with Indian data, AI will be a key to providing services to our citizens." While many countries consider AI as a supplement, Sharma believes AI should be a basic requirement for serving the Indian population on a large scale.
The GPAI Summit 2023 will be held in India. At the summit, 28 member countries and the EU are taking part in discussions about artificial intelligence. To address dangers and stimulate innovation, the government is working on a consensus-based AI declaration.
