With disastrous floods in numerous states owing to an excess monsoon, real-time flood projections from 592 monitoring stations around the nation are now accessible through an app, a move aimed at public safety. FloodWatch India 2.0 was introduced by Jal Shakti minister CR Paatil on Tuesday in his office, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of the nation's flood situation.
The public will also have access to the storage levels of 150 significant reservoirs, which are essential for agriculture, electricity production, and drinking, according to the minister. There were 200 sites where data were available up to now for flood projections. The most recent software also lets users know ahead of time what the expected depth of the submergence is, so they can decide whether to escape. Additionally, it will offer predictions for floods in the downstream regions of the 150 reservoirs under national surveillance.
The previous month has seen thousands of people displaced and hundreds of people killed throughout states due to torrential rains, floods, and landslides caused by an above-normal monsoon that was 6% over average till August 12. Extreme rains and cloudbursts have been ascribed by climate scientists to climate change and the fast expansion of infrastructure in environmentally vulnerable areas. According to the state government's most recent statistics, 231 persons were killed on July 30 in Kerala's Wayanad due to severe landslides that occurred during heavy rains.
"People can comprehend the level and nature of alerts by having access to real-time flood information and forecasts in easily comprehensible formats," an official stated.
The Central Water Commission created the in-house FloodWatch India app, which is compatible with both Android and Apple smartphones. According to the official, it makes use of cutting-edge technology including mathematical modeling, real-time monitoring, and satellite data analysis to provide precise and timely flood forecasts.
The easily navigable application offers all information in both Hindi and English, and it is accessible in both reading and audible formats.
