Samsung has Met the Majority of Workers' Demands According to the Tamil Nadu Govt

By Consultants Review Team Thursday, 10 October 2024

The Tamil Nadu government said on Wednesday that Samsung India Electronics has met the majority of the requests of workers who went on strike on September 9 and reaffirmed its desire that staff return to work immediately. In a similar event, on Tuesday night, several strike participants/affiliates were detained by police and then freed 'on their own bail' by a court.

The authorities have yet to approve the Samsung workers' major demand, the registration of their union, which is endorsed by the CPI(M) affiliated Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU).

Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin stated that Samsung, as a multinational corporation, follows its own regulations. The only point of disagreement is the registration of the workers' union.

"Samsung states that they will not accept a Union with a political affiliation. This is their stance. Currently, negotiations are taking place," he said.

According to Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, the subject is currently in court because Samsung has objected to the Union being backed by any political connection. "CITU contacted the court on September 30, and we are unable to discuss the matter since it is subjudice. "The labor department will act in accordance with the Court's decision," he stated.

According to Thennarasu, Samsung has chosen to provide an additional sum of Rs 5,000 as a special incentive to employees every month beginning in October, and a relief of Rs 1 lakh would be paid if an employee dies while on duty.

Employees would be ferried to the facility in air-conditioned buses, and they would be permitted to take leave to attend family activities in addition to the present holiday schedule.

Meanwhile, CITU office-bearer E Muthukumar filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court, stating that the seven individuals were unfairly imprisoned and illegally arrested. Counsel for the petitioner stated that the agitation was nonviolent. However, the responding cops are interfering.

The Additional Public Prosecutor stated that they were not detained illegally and had been freed. The APP, in reference to the strike/protest, stated that an FIR was filed in response to a law and order situation.

A total of 36 persons were named in the FIR. Eight of them were detained on October 8 and appeared before a judicial judge, who released them. They came before the court on Wednesday to execute sureties and comply with the restrictions.

According to the high court, the employees were permitted to strike peacefully, and there is no unlawful custody 'as depicted by the petitioner.'

In answer to an inquiry about this, Thennarasu stated, "Police did not arrest anyone." When a group of individuals conduct a demonstration without first receiving police authorization, the district administration has done its job. This administration will not tolerate any form of labor exploitation."

Samsung India Electronics Pvt Ltd operates a facility in Sunguvarchatram, Sriperumbudur, and manufactures consumer durables like refrigerators, air conditioners, and televisions.

The Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Tamil Nadu, has appealed for an early and peaceful resolution to the state's industrial conflict.

"We urge all stakeholders involved in the recent industrial dispute to work amicably toward an early solution so that the momentum of economic activity and Tamil Nadu's high image is maintained," stated CII Tamil Nadu State Council Chairman Srivats Ram.

He stated that the State has been at the forefront of attracting foreign direct investment from around the world for numerous decades.

The state is producing a large number of employment in a variety of industries as a result of the government's aggressive policies and other initiatives aimed at making it easier to conduct business.

"We sincerely appreciate the efforts of the State government in providing a conducive atmosphere for all stakeholders in the industrial eco-system to excel and thrive in their chosen fields," Ram stated.
