The development of Bhutan's Rs 6,900 crore Khorlochhu Hydropower Project has begun, with the facility expected to be operational by 2029, according to Tata Power CEO and MD Praveer Sinha.
The Kholongchhu River in the eastern part of the neighboring country is the site of the 600 MW project.
"Our Eyes are on Bhutan. In response to a question about plans for hydro projects outside India," Sinha said that work on the 600 MW project in Khorlochhu has already begun, including tunnel diversion work.
Tata Power and Bhutan-based Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd (DGPC) announced a partnership in August to develop the hydropower project, which is expected to cost Rs 6,900 crore.
40% of Tata Power's shares will be invested in the public-private partnership Khorlochhu Hydro Power Ltd.
Druk Green Power Corporation Ltd. (DGPC) and Tata Power signed a strategic agreement later in November to build 5,000 MW of renewable energy capacity in the Himalayan country.
Bhutan's only power provider is DGPC, a division of Druk Holding and Investments Ltd.
The CEO claims that another 1,125 MW plant will be built in Bhutan as part of the collaboration.
The hydroelectric project, Dorjilung HEP, will start its pre-construction phase.
According to Sinha, the Dorjilung HEP (hydroelectric project) is expected to be finished by the middle of 2031, with pre-construction work starting in January 2025.
He said that there aren't any such plans in Nepal at the moment when asked if the company is looking to establish any initiatives of such nature.
However, if chances arise, they can be evaluated, Sinha said.
